The academic program aims to action the NYA vision and mission statements through real life experiences. The attributes of the School-wide Learner Outcomes (SLO’s) listed below, define the type of learner we hope to develop. At NYA, we embed these attributes into everything we do. We urge students and families to talk about and reflect upon the SLO’s at school and at home.

Independent Learners

An NYA student is self-directed, demonstrating self-discipline, confidence, and a commitment to continuous self-improvement. Students are intrinsically motivated and embrace learning both inside and outside the classroom.

They develop the qualities of lifelong learners by taking initiative, exploring new ideas, and seeking opportunities to grow. They are equipped to conduct meaningful research, critically evaluate information, and draw relevant, well-informed conclusions.

An NYA student will demonstrate strong communication skills in speaking, reading, and writing in the English language. Students will develop mastery of these skills while gaining knowledge and understanding in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and the evolution of world cultures.

Each student will be able to clearly express and convey their ideas, thoughts, and opinions in a manner that can be understood by others. Students will have the confidence to voice their opinions while communicating with respect, empathy, and tolerance toward the beliefs, perspectives, and values of others.

An NYA student will demonstrate critical and analytical thinking skills while developing self-reliance and the ability to find answers and solutions independently. They will be able to gather and evaluate information, process it thoughtfully, and draw relevant and meaningful personal conclusions.

An NYA student will continually strive for growth and improvement in academic work, performance, physical activities, and interactions with teachers, parents, guests, and members of the wider community. They will embrace challenges, learn from experiences, and demonstrate a commitment to achieving personal excellence.

An NYA student will demonstrate integrity and moral responsibility in all aspects of life. They will make thoughtful and responsible decisions about behaviour, considering how those decisions affect both themselves and others. Students will be guided by ethical principles, values, and traditions that encourage respect, fairness, honesty, compassion, and responsibility.

An NYA student will contribute positively to the well-being of their family, school community, country, and the wider world by demonstrating the values and qualities of a responsible and engaged citizen. They will understand how individual actions and choices can affect others and will develop an awareness of local, national, and international issues.

An NYA student will also recognise and respond thoughtfully to the dynamic technological, social, economic, and cultural changes shaping today’s interconnected world. Ultimately, an NYA student will strive to be a positive, responsible, productive, and contributing member of society.

At New York Academy, we strive to ensure that every student feels welcomed, valued, and supported from the moment they join our school. Our dedicated staff creates an engaging and nurturing environment where students feel excited to come to school each day, learn, and build meaningful connections with their peers and teachers.

We foster a diverse and inclusive learning community that enriches our students’ experiences and prepares them to become thoughtful, responsible global citizens. We are committed to helping every student reach their full potential through personalized learning approaches and tailored programs that support gifted learners as well as students with learning and cognitive differences.

We embrace neurodiversity by recognizing and celebrating each child’s unique strengths, abilities, and learning needs. Rather than focusing on deficits, we take a strengths-based approach to learning and development. From the admissions process onward, we work closely with families to understand each student’s individual needs and create the conditions they need to thrive.

When students require additional academic, social, emotional, or developmental support, our school community works collaboratively to provide the appropriate assistance. Where needed, we partner with external specialists in areas such as speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and counselling. Families are encouraged to connect with our team as early as possible so that appropriate support can be identified and put in place.

Many students’ needs can be effectively supported through differentiated instruction, classroom accommodations, and targeted individual or small-group sessions. Where appropriate, these interventions may include specialist therapies and other forms of support.

For students who require ongoing or more individualized assistance, we develop Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) that outline specific goals, strategies, and support measures. These plans are regularly reviewed to monitor progress and ensure that support continues to meet each student’s evolving needs.
