Co-Curricular Activities
At NYA, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom. Our co-curricular programs give students opportunities to discover their interests, develop new skills, build meaningful relationships, and grow in confidence.
From student leadership and competitive sports to creative clubs, field trips, and Summer and Winter holiday camps, our programs are designed to support the development of the whole child. Students are encouraged to explore, take initiative, collaborate with others, and discover their strengths in a supportive and engaging environment.
Student Council
At NYA, we believe students thrive when they are trusted with meaningful responsibilities, given a genuine voice, and encouraged to contribute to their school community.
Our Student Council is founded on the idea of Service Leadership. Rather than viewing leadership as a hierarchy of titles and positions, we see it as an opportunity to listen, contribute, collaborate and enable others to participate.
Students from Grades 3, 4 and 5 come together as members of the Student Council. They discuss ideas, consider the needs and interests of their peers, and collectively decide which initiatives they would like to take forward.
Service Leadership at NYA
At NYA, leadership is not simply about having a title. It is about taking responsibility, serving others and helping create opportunities for others to contribute.
The Council therefore follows a collaborative, relatively flat structure. All members have an opportunity to contribute ideas, participate in decisions and take responsibility for initiatives.
A rotational Chair helps facilitate meetings, coordinate the Council’s work and provide a clear point of communication. The Chair does not hold greater authority over other members. Instead, the role supports purposeful meetings and effective democratic decision-making.
Through this model, students experience leadership as a shared responsibility rather than a position of status.
Leadership in Action
During the current academic year, students will have opportunities to:
- Lead the Super Readers programme
- Develop initiatives such as a Kindness Club and Environment Club
- Host assemblies that showcase student interests, creativity and talent
- Gather and communicate student ideas and feedback
- Propose and lead initiatives that improve student life
- Collaborate with teachers and school leadership
- Reflect on the impact of their work and identify what could be developed further
The specific priorities of the Council will evolve from the students’ own ideas and discussions.
Democracy in Action
The Student Council gives students an authentic opportunity to experience democracy as a lived practice.
Students learn that democratic participation involves more than having a vote. It means listening to different perspectives, contributing ideas, negotiating, respecting differences and taking responsibility for collective decisions.
They also learn that leadership does not always mean directing others. It can mean motivating participation, building trust, encouraging others and creating the conditions for people to contribute their strengths.
At the same time, students develop the confidence, resilience, self-awareness and respect needed to lead themselves well.
Preparing Students for Tomorrow
We believe this approach reflects the changing nature of leadership in the world around us. The leaders of tomorrow will need to collaborate, build trust, navigate different perspectives and enable others to participate.
At NYA, we want students to begin experiencing this kind of leadership early.
Leadership at NYA is not about standing above others. It is about standing with others, contributing meaningfully and helping others find their voice.
Sports & Physical Education
At NYA, physical activity is an essential part of a balanced education. Our Physical & Health Education (PHE) program begins in the Early Years and develops progressively as students grow.
In preschool, active play and structured movement experiences help children develop fundamental physical skills, including coordination, balance, agility, strength, and both gross and fine motor control.
Movement also provides important opportunities for children to develop social and emotional skills. Through games and physical activities, students learn to cooperate, take turns, follow instructions, manage challenges, and build confidence.
As students’ progress through the school, our structured Physical Education program provides opportunities to participate in both team and individual sports. Students develop physical fitness and sporting skills while also learning about teamwork, leadership, personal wellbeing, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices.
A Wide Range of Sports
Students have opportunities to experience a diverse range of sports and physical activities, including:
- Athletics
- Gym structures
- Yoga and stretching
- Group games
- Trust building games
- Football
- Basketball
- Badminton
Our program is designed to accommodate different interests, abilities, and levels of experience. Students are encouraged to participate, challenge themselves, work with others, and develop a lifelong appreciation for physical activity.
Students may also have opportunities to develop leadership skills through sporting responsibilities, including team captaincy and other student leadership roles.
Our goal is to help students understand that physical wellbeing is an important part of overall wellbeing and that healthy habits developed during childhood can support a healthy and active life.
After-School Activities
Our After-School Activities and Clubs provide students with opportunities to explore interests beyond the regular academic curriculum.
These activities encourage creativity, curiosity, physical activity, collaboration, and skill development in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.
Depending on the program schedule and student interest, activities may include:
- Music
- Dance
- Martial Arts
- Baking
- Painting and Visual Arts
- Zumba
- Robotics and Makerspace activities
We also aim to offer a range of movement-based activities when appropriate seasonal and safety conditions allow, including:
- Cycling
- Scootering
- Skateboarding
- Roller skating
- Other “Wheels in Motion” activities
Students can explore different activities, develop existing talents, and discover new interests in an environment that encourages experimentation and creativity.
Innovation & Makerspace Activities
Our After-School Activities program also connects with NYA’s Makerspace and technology programs.
Students may have opportunities to explore areas such as robotics, design thinking, engineering, and emerging technologies. Where appropriate and subject to safety requirements, this may include introductory drone activities and other hands-on technology experiences.
All activities are planned with age appropriateness, supervision, safety, and student wellbeing as priorities.
Field Trips & Camps
Learning at NYA extends beyond the school campus. Field trips, camps, and special events provide students with opportunities to experience new environments, apply their learning in authentic contexts, and develop greater independence. These outbound learning opportunities supplement students’ inquiries and help them connect learning to the real world.
Field trips are offered throughout Semesters 1 and 2, with destinations and activities selected according to students’ age, learning objectives, and interests.
Our camps are offered during the Winter and Summer breaks, with specific dates, themes, and programs announced in advance.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Field trips and camps contribute to students’ holistic development by giving them opportunities to:
- Build confidence and independence
- Develop teamwork and communication skills
- Learn new skills and explore new interests
- Experience different environments and cultures
- Meet new people and build friendships
- Develop responsibility and resilience
- Strengthen their connection to the school community
- Apply classroom learning to real-world experiences
These experiences encourage students to step outside their comfort zones, take on new challenges, and learn through direct experience.
NYA Summer and Winter Holiday Camps
NYA offers four-week Summer and Winter Camps designed to provide students with engaging, educational, and enjoyable experiences during the school holidays.
The camps are open to NYA students as well as students from outside the school community, providing opportunities for children from different backgrounds to learn and interact together.
Each camp is carefully designed around the age, interests, and developmental needs of participating students. Activities combine learning, creativity, physical activity, collaboration, and exploration in a supportive environment.
Camp programs may include:
- Music
- Art and creative expression
- Language learning
- Sports
- Physical and Health Education
- Design Thinking
- Makerspace activities
- Robotics
- Team-building activities
- Outdoor play and exploration
- Collaborative projects
Learning Through Purpose
Where appropriate, camp themes are connected to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
Students explore real-world issues, investigate challenges, and think about how they can contribute to positive change. They are encouraged to identify problems that matter to their communities and consider practical actions they can take.
This approach reflects NYA’s Change Maker Model, helping students understand that learning is not simply about acquiring knowledge—it is also about using that knowledge to make a meaningful difference.
A Safe & Supportive Experience
All camps and activities are planned with student safety, wellbeing, age appropriateness, and meaningful engagement in mind. Programs are supervised by staff and structured to provide a balance of guided activities, exploration, collaboration, creativity, and free play.
Whether students are discovering a new sport, creating a piece of art, building a prototype, learning a language, or working together to address a real-world challenge, our camps aim to make every holiday a meaningful opportunity to learn, explore, create, and grow.
Discover. Participate. Lead. Create.
At NYA, extra-curricular activities are an important part of our commitment to developing confident, capable, compassionate, and curious young people.
Whether through student leadership, sport, creative activities, technology, field trips, or camps, students are encouraged to discover their passions, challenge themselves, work with others, and become active contributors to their community.
These experiences complement academic learning and help students develop the skills, character, and confidence to become change makers in their emerging world.
